Inter Terminal Transfer (ITT)

In large transshipment ports, vessel productivity depends on more than the performance of a single terminal. When containers have to move from one quay to another for their onward connection, the flow between terminals becomes just as critical as what happens at the crane. Inter Terminal Transfer (ITT) ensures that these container moves happen predictably, efficiently and with full visibility for all stakeholders.

Why Inter Terminal Transfer matters

When a vessel discharges containers that must be loaded onto another ship berthing at a different terminal, those units need to be transported across the port. This inter-terminal movement is known as ITT.

In high-volume or hub ports, ITT can represent a substantial share of total moves. Any delay in these transfers ripples through vessel schedules, yard operations, truck capacity planning and overall productivity. A well-coordinated ITT system avoids those bottlenecks.

The Camco ITT Scheduler

Camco’s ITT Scheduler collects transshipment information from all participating terminals and automatically calculates the optimal transfer schedule.

It balances container priorities, vessel cut-offs, available transport resources and terminal capacity constraints.

Once the schedule is finalized:

  • Appointments are automatically created in each terminal’s VBS
  • Capacity is reserved
  • Drivers know exactly which job comes next

This closes the loop between planning and execution on both sides of every ITT move.

Balancing dynamic optimization and predictability

Effective ITT planning sits in a natural tension field. On the one hand, a dynamic system has to react to last-minute vessel changes, yard conditions, truck availability and terminal constraints. On the other hand, stakeholders need timely and stable information to allocate people, equipment and yard space.

The ITT Scheduler is designed to do both: it updates continuously when the situation changes, but communicates updates in a controlled way so terminals and transport resources can still plan with confidence.

Cloud-based, port-wide coordination

The Camco ITT system is cloud-based and typically deployed by port authorities or port-wide coordination entities.

It creates a unified view across terminals, ensuring that transshipment flows are not managed in isolation but as part of one integrated operational landscape.
