Camco Technologies has recently secured significant contracts for African port automation of container terminals in Ghana, Kenya, and Benin. These contracts mark a substantial step forward in modernizing African ports, which are increasingly becoming critical hubs in the global logistics chain.
With the increase in container traffic and growing trade flows in Africa, efficiency in ports is crucial to meet demand. Camco’s innovative technologies are helping African port automation, such as those in Tema, Mombasa, and Cotonou, to optimize their processes, enhance safety, and establish a solid foundation for sustainable growth.
MPS Ghana Terminal – Tema
The MPS Terminal in Tema, Ghana, is operated by Meridian Port Services (MPS). MPS is a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), APM Terminals, and Africa Global Logistics. It is a leading container terminal in West Africa, known for its advanced technology and efficiency. This terminal plays a central role in the region’s maritime trade.
Camco is proud to introduce its BoxCatcher OCR technology on 10 STS cranes at the terminal. The solution also includes washing stations, ADI, and RoofCams for identifying truck trailer roofs. These innovations reduce human errors, accelerate processes, and significantly increase safety. This is especially important after a fatal accident at the quay last year. Thanks to Camco’s solutions, the terminal now operates with a higher level of safety and reliability.
KPA Mombasa Terminal – Kenya
The KPA Mombasa Terminal is managed by the Kenya Ports Authority. It is the largest and most important port in East Africa. The port serves as a logistical lifeline for Kenya and neighboring countries like Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
As part of the ongoing modernization, Camco has been awarded the contract for implementing Rail OCR for double-stacked containers. The contract also includes truck and driver registration and gate automation. These technologies ensure smoother traffic flow for trucks and containers. They increase efficiency and support trade growth in East Africa.
Port Autonome de Cotonou – Benin
The Port Autonome de Cotonou is the largest and most important port in Benin. It is a crucial gateway for international trade in West Africa. Camco has been tasked with automating the access control and parking management processes.
This project includes the installation of advanced gate automation and parking management systems. These systems allow for more efficient management of vehicle and cargo flow. They contribute to the port’s modernization and strengthen its position as a major logistics hub. The port provides access to countries such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. By improving efficiency and safety, Camco helps the port maintain its role in international trade.
The future of African port automation
African ports are on the brink of significant changes, with an expected annual growth of container traffic of 6-8% and substantial infrastructure investments exceeding $100 billion. Automation solutions play a vital role in enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability in these ports. In collaboration with terminals in Ghana, Kenya, and Benin, Camco is contributing to the further development of logistics processes in Africa.
