DUSS Cologne, one of Germany’s largest hinterland terminal operators, actively leverages digitalization to streamline operations at its high-traffic intermodal terminal. Handling over 1,000 vehicles daily and situated near a bustling public road, DUSS required more than a standard solution. To tackle these challenges, they implemented an integrated, scalable traffic management system to efficiently manage complex traffic flows and cargo transfers.
Referent Jürgen Karl, Project Manager for the implementation and development of Videogate technology at DUSS, shares insights on the technology used and its benefits for the terminal. He explains how the gate technology not only identifies vehicles and cargo automatically but also directly aligns crane operations with incoming freight. At the same time, this technology controls access to the terminal, contributing to streamlined and efficient freight handling.
Managing traffic density at DUSS Cologne
This automation enables DUSS to manage traffic density more effectively and optimize the flow of goods between road and rail. In a region near a major city, where efficient and safe freight handling is vital, this capability proves essential. Additionally, the technology ensures long-term sustainability while providing an economically sound solution for the future.
Close collaboration with Camco
In 2021, DUSS selected Camco Technologies to install automated access systems at four key terminals in Germany. The rollout at Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Stuttgart was successfully completed in 2022. In 2023, an expansion followed with 50 additional truck portals and kiosk lanes at terminals in cities such as Munich, Cologne, Duisburg, and Berlin. Recently, an additional order was placed for the Regensburg-Ost terminal.
