VBS at CSP Zeebrugge Terminal

October 29, 2022

CSP Zeebrugge is a state-of-the-art common-user terminal with 7 super post-panamax ZPMC gantry cranes. Since Camco was working on upgrading the gate automation and GOS, CSP Zeebrugge also awarded the new VBS project to Camco with the intention to speed up VBS integration allowing VBS to be ready before the planned Go Live.

VBS software development and testing.

Camco software developers designed and tested the new VBS application prior to implementation. They trained the operators and informed all stakeholders about the VBS benefits. The VBS solution then went live.

Onboarding the truck driver community

Freighters and trucking companies actively participated in the design stage. Based on their feedback, the team made additional adjustments to improve the tool’s user-friendliness.

Once the community adopted the new technology, complaints disappeared. Users then began to experience the benefits, including a significant improvement in appointment creation and faster truck turnaround times.

VBS mobile app for truck drivers

CSP integrated the Camco VBS mobile app to give drivers maximum flexibility and further reduce gate processing time.

Drivers can activate the free app (available for Android and iOS) using a token from the CSP registration desk. This unique token links the driver’s Mifare ID card to their pre-announcement and gate visit.

The VBS mobile app also lets truck drivers check alerts, modify tasks, and complete missing information from inside the cabin, increasing flexibility and efficiency.

CSP Zeebrugge: Improved exception handling

The new VBS solution has been a success for CSP Zeebrugge. The VBS pre-fills most of the pick-up or drop-off information in the TOS. This reduces mistakes at the gate and limits the need for gate controllers to solve issues. As a result, CSP has reduced the time spent on these tasks and decreased the need for customer service resources.

Stakeholder feedback: ECS Technics

ECS (part of ECS2XL) is a 45ft container intermodal logistics operator specializing in transport between the UK and Ireland and mainland Europe, stretching as far as Turkey. With 8,500 45ft high cube containers, 30,000 m2 warehouse capacity and 255,000 full container loads (FCL) per year, it is among the largest logistics operators in Belgium, located just 1 mile from the CSP Zeebrugge terminal. 25 regional truck drivers perform up to 50 hauls per day between the terminal, the ECS logistics center or its clients.

Jan Kennof, one of the routing planners, uses the VBS system on a daily basis. “The migration to the new CSP vehicle booking system went smoothly, since we were already accustomed to the previous CSP VBS system. We were kept in the loop about the go-live.

In the VBS upgrade, for every booking, the driver and license plate have to be pre-registered too, allowing us to track which driver picked or dropped a specific container. Always easy for quick checks when needed. Personally, I am convinced the VBS is a performant operational planning tool and I am pretty sure it improves overall terminal safety and security as well.”
