CFL Intermodal: Gate and rail automation

September 19, 2022

In 2018-19, CFL Intermodal in Luxembourg implemented Camco solutions to automate rail, truck, and semi-trailer operations. These solutions included an integrated access control system. The system managed access across the logistics park, warehouse, and secured truck stop. This upgrade improved operational efficiency and security across the terminal.

CFL Intermodal: Connecting the North and Baltic Sea with Southern Europe

CFL Intermodal is strategically located in the heart of the Eurohub South Industrial zone in Dudelange, Luxembourg. Additionally, combined train shuttles connect the terminal to key industrial regions and ports across the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Southern Europe.

The terminal, covering 33 hectares, specializes in the transshipment of containers, swap bodies, and both craneable and non-craneable semi-trailers. Moreover, it utilizes its state-of-the-art infrastructure to efficiently handle train-to-train transshipment and gateway volumes.

One Gate Operating System

In 2018, Camco implemented truck and rail automation systems for CFL Intermodal’s operational areas, all interconnected via the Gate Operating System (GOS). This system plays a vital role in managing access to the intermodal terminal, logistics park, and secured truck stop.

The terminal processes around 1,500 trucks daily, with gate systems, including two Truck OCR portals and six kiosk lanes, ensuring smooth truck flow. Additionally, each of the three exits features two OCR portals and two kiosk lanes to manage outbound traffic efficiently.

Access to the CFL Intermodal terminal

Camco’s Truck Gate Automation System integrates OCR and LPR cameras, smart card technology, and unmanned driver kiosks to ensure quick access for registered drivers at CFL terminals.

Furthermore, the system captures truck and container data, documenting their condition. As trucks proceed through the gate lanes, driver kiosks and LPR technology validate all incoming data, efficiently directing drivers to the appropriate drop-off or pick-up zones.

Processing rail freight

The terminal processes up to 28 freight trains daily, facilitating the transfer of shipments from road to rail. To automate freight and wagon identification, inspection, and inventory, all trains pass through a Camco-designed Rail OCR Portal.

Additionally, to ensure compliance with rail transport’s specific loading standards, Camco has integrated an automated loading gauge system, further enhancing operational efficiency and safety.

Onboarding truck drivers

The new truck flow and kiosk user interfaces were developed with ease of use in mind.

To ensure smooth onboarding, CFL Intermodal conducted training sessions for truck drivers to familiarize them with the system. For occasional visitors, temporary access cards are issued, while regular visitors receive permanent ID cards. Notably, ease of use was a critical factor during the vendor selection process, ensuring both functionality and driver convenience.

Security check-points at CFL Intermodal

To enable authorized personnel and visitors to access secured areas, Camco has implemented an integrated security and access control system. This includes the use of an access card system, which streamlines the entry process while maintaining strict security protocols. Consequently, the system ensures that only authorized individuals can access sensitive locations, enhancing both efficiency and security across the terminal.
