The future of African ports with new automation contracts in Ghana, Kenya and Benin

With the increase in container traffic and growing trade flows in Africa, efficiency in ports is crucial to meet demand. Camco's innovative technologies are helping African ports, such as those in Tema, Mombasa, and Cotonou, to optimize their processes, enhance safety, and establish a solid foundation for sustainable growth.

The MPS Terminal in Tema, Ghana, operated by Meridian Port Services (MPS), a joint venture between the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA), APM Terminals, and Africa Global Logistics, is a leading container terminal in West Africa and is known for its advanced technology and efficiency. This terminal plays a central role in the maritime trade of the region.

Camco is proud to introduce its BoxCatcher OCR technology on 10 STS cranes at the terminal, along with washing stations, ADI, and RoofCams for identifying truck trailer roofs. These solutions reduce human errors, accelerate processes, and significantly increase safety, especially given that there was a fatal accident at the quay last year. Thanks to Camco’s solutions, the terminal can operate with a higher level of safety and reliability.

The KPA Mombasa Terminal, managed by the Kenya Ports Authority, is the largest and most important port in East Africa. The port is a logistical lifeline for Kenya and surrounding countries such as Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

As part of the ongoing modernization of the terminal, Camco has been awarded the contract for the implementation of Rail OCR for double-stacked containers, as well as truck and driver registration and gate automation. These technologies ensure smoother traffic flow of trucks and containers, increase efficiency, and support trade growth in East Africa.

The Port Autonome de Cotonou is the largest and most important port in Benin and a crucial gateway for international trade in West Africa. Camco has been tasked with automating the access control and parking management processes.

This project includes the installation of advanced gate automation and parking management systems, which allow for more efficient management of vehicle and cargo flow. These solutions contribute to the modernization of the port and strengthen its position as a major logistics hub for the region, providing access to countries such as Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso. By improving efficiency and safety, Camco is helping the port maintain its role in international trade.

African ports are on the brink of significant changes, with an expected annual growth of container traffic of 6-8% and substantial infrastructure investments exceeding $100 billion. Automation solutions play a vital role in enhancing efficiency, safety, and sustainability in these ports.
