Smart digitalization at DUSS Cologne for more efficient freight handling

07 November 2024

DUSS Cologne, one of the largest terminal operators in the German hinterland, has embraced digitalization to optimize the management of their high-traffic intermodal terminal. With over 1,000 vehicles passing through daily and a location near a busy public road, a standard solution simply wasn’t enough. DUSS therefore chose an integrated, scalable traffic management system to efficiently handle the complex traffic flows and cargo transfer.

Referent Jürgen Karl, Project Manager for the implementation and development of Videogate technology at DUSS, shares insights on the technology used and its benefits for the terminal. He explains how the gate technology not only identifies vehicles and cargo automatically but also directly aligns crane operations with incoming freight. At the same time, this technology controls access to the terminal, contributing to streamlined and efficient freight handling.

Managing traffic density

Thanks to this automation, DUSS can better manage traffic density and further optimize the flow of goods between road and rail. This is crucial in a region near a major city, where efficiency and safety in freight handling are increasingly important. Moreover, the chosen technology is designed for long-term sustainability and offers an economically sound solution for the future.

Close collaboration with Camco

In 2021, DUSS selected Camco Technologies to install automated access systems at four key terminals in Germany. The rollout at Frankfurt, Hamburg, Leipzig, and Stuttgart was successfully completed in 2022. In 2023, an expansion followed with 50 additional truck portals and kiosk lanes at terminals in cities such as Munich, Cologne, Duisburg, and Berlin. Recently, an additional order was placed for the Regensburg-Ost terminal.
